INTRODUCTION

Food security, sustainable livelihood development, and animal welfare are crucial aspects of life in Turkana, a region where communities face significant challenges due to the harsh climate, frequent droughts, and limited economic opportunities. APaD plays a vital role in addressing these issues by working closely with local communities through various programs designed to enhance resilience, improve livelihoods, and ensure the well-being of both people and animals.

FOOD SECURITY IN TURKANA

Food security is a persistent challenge in Turkana, largely due to the region’s arid conditions, which lead to poor agricultural yields and reduced livestock productivity. Malnutrition rates, especially among children, are high, making food security a priority. To tackle this, APaD implements several initiatives:

  1. Climate-Smart Agriculture: APaD promotes the use of drought-resistant crops and improved farming techniques that maximize yields even in challenging environments. These practices help ensure that communities can produce enough food to meet their needs, even during dry seasons.
  2. Irrigation Support: Recognizing the importance of water for agriculture, APaD supports the development of small-scale irrigation systems. These systems enable farmers to grow crops throughout the year, reducing their reliance on erratic rainfall and improving food availability.

Sustainable Livelihood Development

In Turkana, traditional livelihoods such as pastoralism are increasingly threatened by climate change and environmental degradation. APaD focuses on sustainable livelihood development to help communities adapt and thrive:

  1. Diversification of Income Sources: APaD encourages and trains communities in alternative income-generating activities like beekeeping, small-scale trade, and handicraft production. These activities provide additional sources of income that are less dependent on the unpredictable environment.
  2. Village Savings and Loans Associations (VSLAs): APaD has supported VSLAs across Turkana to promote financial inclusion and economic empowerment, particularly among women. These groups enable members to save money, access small loans, and invest in income-generating activities, fostering economic resilience.

ANIMAL WELFARE

Livestock is central to the livelihoods of Turkana communities, serving as a primary source of income, food, and transportation. Ensuring the health and welfare of these animals is therefore critical:

  1. Veterinary Services: APaD provides regular veterinary clinics where livestock are vaccinated and treated for common diseases. This helps maintain the health and productivity of animals, which in turn supports the economic stability of households.
  2. Donkey Welfare Programs: Recognizing the importance of donkeys for transportation and labor, APaD partners with the County Government to run programs focused on the care and welfare of working donkeys. This includes providing treatment for injuries and diseases, as well as educating owners on proper care practices.
  3. Community Education: APaD conducts outreach and education campaigns to raise awareness about the importance of animal welfare. By teaching best practices in animal husbandry and management, APaD helps ensure that livestock are well cared for, which directly benefits the livelihoods of the communities.

4.APaD’s Community Engagement: APaD’s success in these areas is largely due to its deep engagement with local communities. The organization works hand-in-hand with community members to identify needs, develop tailored solutions, and implement programs that are sustainable and culturally appropriate.

Through these programs, APaD works closely with the communities in Turkana to build resilience, improve health outcomes, and promote sustainable livelihoods, all while fostering a holistic approach to health that integrates human, animal and environmental well-being.
