This project was funded by The Brooke East Africa for a period of 3 Months (May to July 2019)

Key Achievements

  • Seven (7) boreholes rehabilitated in Lokiriama, Kaekoroakwaan (2 boreholes), Urum, Lokwatuba, Lomilo and Nagis within Loima and solar pumping unit at Nanam Centre repaired- More than 3,000 HH in Loima and Turkana West sub counties were able to access to clean portable domestic water for domestic use and for their livestock. Some communities in Kaekoroakwaan have established a garden which uses runoff from the borehole, thus contribution to improved household food security and nutrition.
  • 1600 bales of high-quality hay distributed to vulnerable donkeys and other Livestock-More than 700 donkeys’ vulnerable accessed lifesaving supplementary feeds in the target areas of Loima and Turkana West. These included: Namoruputh (118) Lorugum (150),Lomil(300 donkeys) and Nanam(200 donkeys).The supplementary feeds have also benefited more than 5,000 small stick especially goats which has led to increase in milk production hence improving household nutrition.
  • Support the sub county vets in Loima and Turkana Wet through purchase of drugs-256 donkeys and more than 400 shoats treated by the sub county veterinarians in Turkana West and Loima Sub Counties.

 

APaD has facilitated and facilitated in various research initiatives that informed policy within Turkana County

  • Facilitated the ongoing Research on Karamoja Cluster Conflict and Climate Assessment and Political Economy Analysis Assessments funded by USAID for the period of December 2022 to April 2023.Data collection has been completed within Karamoja that covers: Kenya-Turkana and West Pokot Counties Uganda-Amudat, Moroto, Kotido and Kaabong districts, South Sudan-Budi, Kapoeta East, Kapoeta North and Kapoeta South counties, Ethiopia-Desanech and Nyangatom Woredas
  • Facilitated communities in development of six (6) Disaster Risk Reduction Plans prepared and handed over to the county government for integration into the County Integrated Development Plan under the ACT! funded CRM project
  • In collaboration with KEFRI, GIZ and CARITAS, took lead in a socio-economic household baseline survey in Seven (7) selected sites with technical officers from the County Government in Turkana West and Loima.
  • Facilitated research on the illegal slaughter and smuggling of donkeys within Turkana County and the cross-border regions of Karamoja under the Brooke EA funded project.
  • Lobbied for inclusion of animal welfare in the Turkana Livestock Policy under the Brooke EA funded donkey welfare and resilience project.
